In June 2014 I learned a sexy chair routine with a group for a friend’s stagette. I had begun to realize that I finally found a type of dance exercise I enjoyed; a sexy, sultry, adult way of dance! Upon sharing this experience with a friend, I was quickly introduced to the “Beer! Bacon! Boobs! Burlesque Brunch” series at Mikey’s Pub in downtown Calgary. I became an avid attendee to their shows. The confidence radiating off of these women was nothing short of inspiring. All shapes, sizes and different levels of dance skill. If they could do it, I could too! I was hooked.
I decided that my 2015 New Year’s resolution was to sign myself up for a Burlesque class. I joined Burlesque Burn and quickly fell in love with the taunt, the tease, and the sass! Consequently, this was also a chance to use my sewing and costuming skills more frequently than just at Halloween. I studied under the instruction of Daisy DeVille & Dusty Topps, and when the opportunity came up to create and perform my own solo, I jumped at the chance. After a grueling 6 weeks of hard work, listening to the same song over and over, blood, sweat, tears, glitter, glue and rhinestones, I had designed myself a costume and created my very first skit. And that’s when Emerald Vixen was born. After my show, I was completely overwhelmed by the cheers of the crowd, the compliments, and my new found self-confidence.
Burlesque has given me the opportunity to express myself in a way that appeals to my darker, lustful side. It’s given me a new found love for my body and continues to provide me with an outlet for my creativity. There is nothing more rewarding than finding something you love, something you’re good at, and something that builds your self-confidence!
